Un comité d'initiative du chemin de fer funiculaire Lausanne-Signal fut créé le 14 juillet 1896. La compagnie du chemin de fer du Lausanne-Signal fut constituée en société anonyme le 16 juin 1898. La ligne fut inaugurée le 18 octobre 1899 et fut définitivement fermée le 31 octobre 1948. La dissolution de la compagnie fut votée le 15 novembre 1948 et sa mise en liquidation fut décidée à partir du 1er janvier 1949. La liquidation fut définitivement réglée au 30 juin 1952.
