Im Jahr 1659 gründete Hans Jakob Wagner (1633-1683) beim Zytglogge die dritte Apotheke der Stadt Bern. 1851 erwarb Alexander Wildbolz-Marcuard (1825-1879) die Apotheke von der Familie Wagner. Nach Wildbolz' Tod übernahm dessen langjähriger Mitarbeiter Richard Schobert (?-1887) aus Württemberg das Geschäft, welches er unter dem Namen 'Apotheke Schobert vorm. Wildbolz'sche Apotheke' weiterführte. 1889 kaufte Wilhelm Volz (1857-1938) die Apotheke, die er unter ' Apotheke W. Volz vorm. R. Schobert b. Zeitglocken' in das Handelsregister eintragen liess. 1916 übernahm Volz die Apotheke Lindt. Im selben Jahr übernahmen Wilhelms Söhne, Wilhelm Volz (1887-1957) und Friedrich Volz (1888-1965), das Geschäft, welches fortan 'W. Volz & Co. Central-Apotheke beim Zeitglocken' hiess. Zehn Jahre später bezog die Apotheke den Neubau beim Zytglogge. Unter der Leitung von Friedrichs Sohn, Bernhard Friedrich Volz (1934-1984), der das Geschäft 1963 übernahm, wurde die Apotheke modernisiert und 1982 eine Aktiengesellschaf umgewandelt. Nach dem Tod von Bernhard Friedrich konnte seine Ehefrau, Regula Volz, die Apotheke zu 100% übernehmen. 2002 kaufte Renata Mordasini die Centralapotheke, welche sie 2017 an die Apothekenkette Amavita verkaufte.

Der Bestand, der insbesondere den Neubau von 1926-1927 dokumentiert, wurde der Burgerbibliothek Bern 2020 durch Regula Volz als Geschenk übergeben.
